Hebrews 8:12 ESV

12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”

Here we have an incredible promise from God. He promises to extend His mercy to us and to no longer remember our sins. Of course we know that God is not really capable of forgetting. He even knows the sins that we have yet to commit. When God says that He will remember our sins no more, He is really saying that He will not dwell on them. He will not condemn us for our sins provided we have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ to be our Lord and Savior.

As John pointed out: 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

God is faithful. He will forgive us our sins and will cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Just as King David prayed for God to create a clen heart within him, God will do the same for us. His cleansing from all unrighteousness is God’s act of cleaning our heart.

King David also frequently prayed in the Psalms for God to be merciful to him. Here we have the answer to David’s prayer. As God was merciful to King David, He has promised to be merciful to us as well. We have a merciful God. He is full of mercy, compassion, and love for His people.

God will show mercy towards us by forgiving our sins, cleansing our heart, and refusing to remember our sins forever. Once confessed, God will not remind you of those sins. However, until you confess them, the Holy Spirit will convict you f them. This conviction is good. It causes you to confess so that God may forgive those sins permanently and your fellowship with God can be restored.

However, this promise is only for those who have placed their faith in Christ for His salvation. If you have not yet done so, today is the day of salvation. Trust Him today and receive God’s promises of mercy, forgiveness and cleansing.
