The Peace of God- Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV)
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Are you anxious about something? Do you long for peace? Have you searched for peace and been unable to find it? Many people search in many places for peace and are unable to attain it. True peace is found in our God, the God of Peace. The place to find peace is in prayer.
Paul tells us that when we pray with thanksgiving and make our requests known to God we will receive the peace of God. Now, we already have peace with God (Romans 5:1), but now we will also have the peace of God. The peace of God is a peace that, as Paul puts it, surpasses all understanding. God the Father is the God of Peace (1 Thes. 5:23). The phrase surpasses all understanding refers to the divine origin of this peace.
Paul adds the words “with thanksgiving.” Thanksgiving should be the natural heart attitude when we pray to begin with. We need to thank God for the blessings he has given us. James tells us that every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of Lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. (James 1:17).
When you become anxious. When you find yourself worrying about something, as the song says: Take it to the Lord in prayer. He cares for you, and he wants you to bring your concerns to him. Perhaps you are anxious concerning your eternal destiny because you have not trusted Jesus to be your Lord and Savior. If that’s you, trust him today. Today is the day of salvation. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.
