The Great Commission- Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV)
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Now that Easter has come and gone, it’s time to think about the church. In His post-resurrection appearances to His disciples, Jesus gave them His parting words before ascending back to His Father.
When Jesus walked the earth, He preached the gospel and made disciples before dying for the sin of the world. Now the disciples were to pick up the mantle and continue to make disciples and build the church. The church would be built and grow through the preaching of the gospel message, the making of disciples through continuing education, and baptism in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The Great Commission that Jesus spoke to His disciples is just as applicable for today’s church as it was to them. For over two-thousand years, faithful disciples have carried this commission throughout the world. The church has grown, and continues to grow through faithful disciples continuing to preach and teach the gospel, and to make more disciples.
Having celebrated the salvation of God through the atoning death of Christ on the cross, let us now obediently take up the mantle of continuing to build His church. If you have not yet trusted Christ as your Savior, you too can contribute to the building of the church by trusting Christ to save you and then becoming a member of a Christ exalting, gospel preaching church.
