The Pure in Heart – Matthew 5:8 ESV
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus declared that the pure in heart were blessed, for they shall see God. Who are the pure in heart? The pure in heart are those whose hearts have been washed in the blood of the spotless Lamb of God. The Bible has much to say about the heart.
Jeremiah 17:9 states: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
In Psalm 24:3, David asked the question, “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place?” The answer is given in verse 4: He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.
Clean hands speaks of our actions, and pure heart speaks of our motives. A clean heart dwells on the truth, it does not chase after falsehood or deception. A person with a pure heart, will consider what he’s seeing or being told in light of the word of God.
And in Philippians 4:8 Paul wrote: Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
A person with a pure heart seeks to honor Christ in all he or she says and does. Is your heart pure? Have you come to Christ for cleansing? In 1 John 1:9 we read: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. God cleanses your heart when you confess your sins to him. He does this through the blood of Christ.
Come to Christ today. Confess your sins, and be cleansed from all unrighteousness. You wil then have the pure heart that is required for you to see God.
