Jesus: The resurrection and the life- John 11:25-26 ESV
“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
This is one of the great seven “I am” statements Jesus made about himself as recorded in John’s gospel account. This statement was spoken to Martha, one of the sisters of Lazarus, just prior to Jesus demonstrating this truth by raising Lazarus from the dead.
Jesus not only raised from the dead himself but has the power to raise every person who has ever lived as well. The day will come when Jesus will raise each and every one of us, some to everlasting life, and some to contempt.
The resurrection is a promise from Jesus. There will be a resurrection. The question is: which resurrection will you be in? Will you be raised to eternal life? Or will you suffer the second death? Those who have placed their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will be raised to everlasting life in the kingdom of God.
This is part of the great hope that we have in Christ. We look for His appearing (return), and we look forward to the resurrection of life. This is what separates Christianity from religion. Christianity is a relationship to God through Jesus Christ.
His virgin birth, sinless life, atoning death on the cross, burial and resurrection make it possible for us to be resurrected to everlasting life as long as we have trusted in Christ for our salvation. Jesus also told Martha that he who believes in Him will live though he dies. Death is not the end. As Jesus conquered death, we can as well by faith in Him. Trust in Christ, and you are guaranteed the resurrection to everlasting life. You have God’s word on that.
