The New Covenant-Jeremiah 31:35-36 ESV
35 Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—the Lord of hosts is his name: 36 “If this fixed order departs from before me, declares the Lord, then shall the offspring of Israel cease from being a nation before me forever.”
Thursday of this week will be New Year’s Day. Many will make New Year’s resolutions only to break them soon afterwards. A New Year’s resolution is a promise that we make to and with ourselves. Most New year’s resolutions are broken within a matter of weeks. Man has a way of breaking promises. Even promises we make to ourselves. But our Lord never breaks a promise.
When the Lord revealed the New Covenant to Jeremiah he assured Jeremiah that it would be an eternal covenant. He did this by referring to the fixed order of nature. The New Covenant was originally given to the nation of Israel. It was expanded to include Gentiles as well.
The Lord was saying that if the fixed order of nature were to ever cease to function, then God’s covenant would cease as well. Jeremiah knew, as we do, that this fixed order of the universe will never cease. Therefore, Israel will always exist as a nation, and the redeemed of mankind will remain redeemed. That was God’s promise to Jeremiah, and to us as well.
Man cannot break this covenant, only the Lord could, and he is making it crystal clear here that he will not break this covenant. The New Covenant is a sure thing. If you have trusted in Christ for your salvation, you can be secure in the knowledge of your eternal salvation. You have God’s word on that.
If you have not trusted in Christ as your Lord and Savior, there’s no better time than today. Start the new year as a redeemed child of God. He promises you eternal security covered by the New Covenant.
